Curso / Discurso is a rare book, unusual, difficult to describe, and even more so to define. Typologically speaking, one could say it is a poetic essay on photography books and the visual language that uses design books and photography to project and gain sense to express itself. There is a lot of purpose in it; years of exercise and thoughtful work. It is the result of a meticulous care, diligent attention to detail, and work of effort at its finest. Its authors are profesional designers, editors and photographers that are well-known for their work and art. But more importantly, for their particular way of displaying and presenting it to the public.

The speed that light travels at in order to go through water (224.844.349 m/s) allows us to break the algorithm of digital images and to dive into the depths of the screen, to that place where the pixel is born. This minimal unit stands at the basis of contemporary plastic arts and it is its mathematical language that makes it possible for cities like Cadiz and Havana, connected by their architectural origins but separated by the blue ocean, to communicate visually. By navigating on the pixel we will be able to pass through the marine looking glass that brings these two twin cities apart, and at the same time to bring together all of the gazes projected from the shore into one reflection.

This book gathers the results of a study carried out from 2008 to 2014 that explores the ties of dependency that human beings have created with their urban environment and the way in which, after becoming aware of this oppressive relationship that alienates them from their own essence, they free themselves from it in order to return to a primitive state, in direct contact with nature. This evolution is articulated in four complementary blocks: The man, the city, the collapse of the straight line, and the return to nature. The man, uniformed in dark suits, possesses the creative power but remains subject to the very surroundings he has designed and domesticated in order to feel sheltered from potential external threats. This illusory sense of safety leads him to lose contact with himself and wander disoriented within his own labyrinth. The city becomes a prison in which the crosswalks represent the final and most perfect distillation of the urban sign, capable of articulating and musicalizing the daily transit of the man. The collapse happens when the man realizes that the straight lines used to build his refuge have become the very bars that confine him. In order to escape, he surrenders to the weight of the matter that condemns him to reality, blending into the asphalt. The journey home, the journey back to nature, begins.
